Ara Crowe, Jr.

Ara Marshall Crowe Jr., 79, Glen Burnie, MD, passed away on December 3, 2020 in the HeartLand’s Assisted Living Facility, Severna Park, MD after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He is survived by Carolyn (Novak), his high school sweetheart from South Baltimore High and loving wife of 59 years.

Also surviving are the three daughters he considered his pride and joy; Cheryl Hogarth and her husband Michael of Haymarket, VA, Denise Smallenbroek and her husband Dan of Davidsonville, MD, and Kelly Qualey and her husband David of Deerfield, NH.

He will be greatly missed by his surviving grandchildren Wade Shelton of Fairfax, VA, Wesley Shelton of Richmond, VA, Jessica (Hogarth) Arey of Mt. Sidney, VA, Rebecca (Hogarth) Wagner of Mt. Crawford, VA, Callie (Smallenbroek) Schutt of Crofton, MD, Ben Smallenbroek of Crofton, MD, Cameron Qualey, Logan Qualey, and Connor Qualey of Deerfield, NH.  He also had the pleasure of being a great-grandfather to Charlotte Arey and Noah Wagner.

Born and raised in South Baltimore, Ara graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law.  He enjoyed a celebrated Legal career in the Office of the State’s Attorney Office in Baltimore City for 28 years which included Chief of the Trial Division (now General Felony Division).  In retirement he served as Director of the Maryland State’s Attorney Association (MSAA) where he had been a career member of the Capital Litigation Committee and was Faculty Advisor for the Trial Advocacy Program.

Outside of the courtroom, Ara was known to friends and family for his stylish attire, sense of humor, and a penchant for being the life of the party.  He loved his wine, a good cigar, dining at Sabatino’s in Little Italy, and playing on the area’s finest golf courses with friends.   His hobbies included being an amateur sports photographer and became quite an accomplished ballroom dancer with his wife, Carolyn.  He always looked forward to spending his annual summer vacations with his family at Bethany Beach enjoying vodka tonics on the beach and playing bocce ball in the sand with sons-in-law and grandchildren.  As a Baltimore native, he was an avid lifetime sports fan of the Orioles, Colts, Ravens, and Maryland Basketball.

The family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 1 2nd Ave. SW (at Crain Hwy), on Saturday, December 12th, from 2 – 4 & 6-8 PM.   A Celebration of Life service will be Private.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are only allowing 40 people inside the funeral home at one time and requiring masks for all visitors.  We kindly ask that you please keep your visit brief, as there may be people waiting to enter the funeral home.
