Alan R. Mace, age 74, was a longtime resident of Millersville. Born in Bar Harbor, Maine, he retired from Westinghouse in 1993 after 36 years of employment. He was hired as an engineer and worked in the early stages of airborne radar. At retirement, he was a manager of a large engineering group responsible for development of ground and sea-based systems, and of surveillance radars for the FAA. During his career, he was instrumental in the development of the AWACS surveillance aircraft and was involved in the awarding of several U.S. patents. Alan enjoyed woodworking, gardening and antiques. For part of his retirement, he ran an antiques business in Crofton with his wife of 48 years, Jane Easter Mace, and liked to refinish and repair antiques. He also made furniture for his home, in one case duplicating an antique corner cabinet. He was also interested in car restoration. Alan was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church for almost fifty years, serving on the vestry on many occasions and as senior warden several times. He was always awailable to help with parish projects. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dr. John C. Mace of Mustang, Okla., and Matthew A. Mace of Arnold; and one grandson, Christopher Mace.
