Allen Lee "Tim" Tyler, 77, a resident of Glen Burnie, Maryland for 41 years and previously of Baltimore, Maryland, died of congenital heart failure at the University of Maryland on January 15th.
He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 16, 1933 to William T. and Erma Tyler. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, served in the U.S. Army and then graduated from the University of Maryland in 1961 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He then worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFS), retiring after 38 years of service in 1997. His technical expertise in support of the development of the DIRBE instrument launched aboard the COBE spacecraft helped to provide scientists, both at Goddard and around the world, an unprecedented glimpse of our early universe. He also contributed to the Cassini and INMS instruments which provided a first-ever look at the makeup of the planet Saturn's atmosphere and the Galileo Probe Mass Spectrometer Experiment which successfully made the first ever in-situ measurement of the Jupiter atmosphere. Other Goddard programs on which we worked were OSO, Mariner I and II, RAE, HRAO-A, Pioneer Venus, and the Dynamics Explorer Mission. In 1991 he received a Medal for Exceptional Engineering Achievement and in 1994 served on the Hubble Space Telescope First Servicing Mission Systems Review Team during the conduct of its Independent Design Review Program.
He was happiest when he had an opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren and especially enjoyed watching his grandsons, Joey and Troy play baseball at Cooperstown. Each year he looked forward to traveling to Myrtle Beach with his wife.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Tyler and his granddaughter, Brittany Nicole Tyler; daughter-in-law, Michelle and a grandson, Michael Jacob Tyler.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Ann (nee Klima); his son, Daniel J. Tyler and wife, Janet; his sons, Christopher P. Tyler and Gregory M. Tyler and grandchildren, Daniel "Joey" Tyler, Jr., Allison N. Tyler, Brooke Presley Tyler, and Troy M. Tyler; his brother, Warren Tyler and sister, Mary Walker.
