Bernard J. Winn. Sr., 87, a WWII Navy Veteran, Federal retiree and former 30-year tour guide for the Basilica of the National Shrine, died of cancer on July 6, 2012. Bernie was aboard one of the ships taking the first wave into the Battle of Anzio in WWII, serving three of his four Navy years in combat. Bernie graduated Durfee High School in MA and received a Business degree from Bryant College in RI. He moved to Bowie, MD from RI in 1966, chosen as part of a special team to determine if medical and pharmacy systems for VA Hospitals could be computerized. After 35 years with the VA hospital, he retired as a Supervisory Computer Specialist from the Inspector General's Office in 1978. Bernie was born in Fall River, MA in 1924 to Bernard and Ethel (Tonge) Winn. He was pre-deceased by his sister Margaret, and his wife of 56 years, Anna Pichierri, formerly of RI. He leaves behind his two children, Patti (and husband Grant) Kelly, and Bernie Winn, Jr., as well as his grandson, Richard Gugliotta, all of Maryland. Bernie has extended family including two step-grandchildren, Kim (and husband Wade) Lape, and Pam Banks, and their families as well as many dear friends in MD and PA. Bernie also has special nieces and nephews in RI and MA. Bernie will be remembered as a man who lived his deep faith. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
