Catherine Ida Callander,98, of Glen Burnie,MD and Kill Devil Hills,NC
died peacefully on Wednesday, June 19 in her daughter's home in Kill
Devil Hills.
She was born April 29, 1915 in St. Paul. Minnesota, the daughter of Ida
Mae and William Bauman. Her two sisters and three brothers preceded her
in death. She was the widow of Willard Sterling Callander; they were
married for 58 years. He was a drummer and first sergeant of the U.S.
Army Field Band, Ft. Meade,MD for over 20 years. During World War II
she drove from Minnesota to California to be with her husband who was
in the Army there. She worked in a wartime factory until they moved to
Maryland in 1946. They moved to Ferndale in 1949 and to Glen Burnie in
1955. She worked on the assembly line at Westinghouse and later as
cashier at the Glen Burnie High cafeteria.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Callander Burgee, and her
husband Fred. She was dearly loved by her two granddaughters, Heather
Burgee Kepler, and her husband Russell, and Krista Burgee Barnes, and
her husband Cooper. Her loving great grandchildren are Frederick Kade
Kepler, Catherine Reese Kepler, Landry Cooper Barnes, and Camille
Sterling Barnes, all of Kill Devil Hills, NC.
She was a member of Odenton Chapter of the Eastern Star, drove for Meals on Wheels, and was a member of Ferndale Methodist Church for over50 years.
She particularly enjoyed watching Orioles baseball, listening to
the Army Field Band and the Frederick Chorale, and reading novels. She
especially enjoyed all the time spent with her granddaughters and great
grandchildren - games, plays, singing, dancing and sports events.
