Catherine Elizabeth Smothers "Phenie", beloved daughter of the late Isabelle Brooks and Milton Madison Smith; was born on March 11, 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland. She left this life for eternal life on February 11, 2012. On September 13, 1958, Catherine married Melvin Quinton Smothers, Sr. and from this union came four children: Sabrina, Melvin Jr., Jacqueline and Howard, who preceded her in death. She was blessed with six grandchildren: George, Carl, Sierra, Christopher, Derek and Jared. They called Cherry Hill their home. Her Christian Life started early in her childhood. She was baptized at St. Francis Xavier and graduated from St. Francis Academy. She became a member of St. Veronica Roman Catholic Church in the 1960's. She worshipped with Father Coughlin, Cassidy, Banet, Wagner, Jim, McKenna, Frank, Fest, Augustine and Fest again. She also worshipped with the late Bishop Carl F. Fisher. Phenie was an active member of the St. Veronica Women's Club with the late Dorothy Garnes, Louise Gilmore, and active members Tyrice, Estella, Valeria, Henrietta, Connie, Charlotte, Margaret, Patsy, Sarah, Vashti, Gloria, Crystal, Delores, Marchia, Heather, Kathy, Kelli, Natasha, Gina, Dawn, Renea, Rachelle and Jackie Powell. Phenie had many hobbies that she shared with her two best friends: the late Maggie Wiley and Janice Madden-Norton. The hosted Tonk, Patty Pat, Deuces Wild and Pinnacle Parties with the likes of Everta, Mary Mack, Mary Summers, Kitten, Gwen Johnson, Eunice, Quennie and Mable Sample. Phenie loved to play Bingo at Bingo World in Patapsco and Laurel, Maryland with Dee, Alice, Maggie, Janice, Eunice, Martha, Everta, Blanche and Gwen. Phenie was a worldly woman who loved to travel. She visited the Bahamas, Bermuda, Niagara Falls, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, London, Paris and Japan.
To Cherish Her Memory she leaves: her daughters, Sabrina and Jackie; her son, Melvin Smothers, Jr.; her brothers, Milton, Michael and Eddie Smith; her sisters, Delphine Burman and Mae McCauley; two sister-in-laws, Irma and Rhodie Smith; one brother-in-law, Thomas McCauley. She also leaves behind one son-in-law, George Boddy, III; five grandsons, one granddaughter, four great-nieces and two great grandsons, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
