Charles Melvin Powell

Charles Melvin Powell of Arbutus, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home in Severn, Maryland, on December 6, 2021, with his wife of 69 years at his side. He married Mary E. Snyder Powell, on September 13, 1952.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice Powell; his brother, James (Shirley) Powell; and granddaughter, Amy Rhodes.

Mel is survived by his devoted wife, and loving daughters, Charlene Rhodes (William), Barbara White (Russ), and son, David Powell; his cherished grandchildren, Joe White (Nicole), Steven Rhodes (Holly), Stephanie Powell, Bryan White (Kylie), Jason Rhodes, Michelle Powell, and Michael Rhodes (Kellie); and 13 beloved great-grandchildren.

Mel grew up in Arbutus with his parents, James D. and Alice Mae Powell, and one brother, James W. Powell. Mel, as he was known, graduated from Catonsville High School in 1951.  He served in the United States Navy Reserves for 8 years. He retired from the National Security Agency in 1987, and was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge #2266 in Glen Burnie for many years.  Mel was a true family man, PTA president, softball coach for his daughters, loved family gatherings, blue crabs, and his vegetable garden. His smile was infectious, he had a great sense of humor and wit, always making friends and family laugh. He loved to golf with friends in his younger days and loved his Burger King lunch dates with his wife. He will be missed by all.  Rest now Mel, Dad, Pop, Pop-Pop, Uncle, and Friend.

The family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 1 2nd Ave. S.W. (at Crain Hwy) on Saturday, December 11th, from 11 AM – 1 PM. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held immediately following, at 1 PM, in the funeral home chapel.
