On July 8, 2013 Doris May Birx (nee Hammond) went home to be with the Lord at age 93. A devoted homemaker, lifetime Anne Arundel County resident, and a 9th generation descendent of Major General John Hammond of the Colonial Militia and his father Thomas Hammond, who settled on the Severn River in 1650 and produced a long line of farmers / planters and important figures in Maryland history. Also the last surviving occupant born and raised in the Benson - Hammond House, now headquarters of the Anne Arundel County Historical Society of which she was a charter member.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Herman John Birx. She is survived by her 4 children; Timothy Birx and Ruth Mallette of Woodlawn Heights, Barbara Lois Young of Frederick, and Martha Roth of Mont Clare, PA.; 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She is also survived by John Merle Stoll of Linthicum, the last remaining of 44 first cousins who were descendents of numerous prominent Northern Anne Arundel County farmers.
