Dorothy Jane Melson Singleton. Born April 12, 1924 in Delmar, Maryland and died February 15, 2012 in Annapolis Maryland. Dorothy devoted her life to her family and friends. After receiving her teacher's certificate from Salisbury State Teachers College, where she was elected Homecoming Queen in her senior year, she went on to teach elementary school in Anne Arundel County. She was married to Richard V. Singleton for more than twenty-five years. While a homemaker she served as a volunteer in her community through the Ki-wives and other service organizations. She resided in Glen Burnie until 1995, when she moved to Annapolis. In her later years she worked as a docent for Historic Annapolis and at the William Paca house, and took great pride in her tireless work to save and restore the Benson-Hammond House of Linthicum. Dorothy served as a board member and docent director at the Benson Hammond House for many years.
Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents, Mattie and William Melson and her sister Geraldine Melson Holtz. She is survived by her three children: Richard V. Singleton II and his wife Kathryne of Fair Haven, New Jersey, Donna Singleton of Little Rock, Arkansas and Beth Ann Singleton Howland and her husband Keith Howland of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Emma Grace and Andrew John Singleton of Fair Haven, New Jersey.
Donations in Dorothy's honor may be sent to the Ann Arrundell County Historical Society/Benson-Hammond House at P.O. Box 385, Linthicum, MD 21090.
