Ellamae J. Williams, 86, went home to the Lord on Thursday night, Oct. 20, 2011 at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Ellamae was born June 1, 1925 in Charlotte Courthouse, Virginia. She was the middle child of five daughters born to John and Elizabeth Johnson. Ellamae lived in Montclair, New Jersey and was a 1944 graduate of Montclair High School, where she enjoyed playing volleyball and basketball. Ellamae loved spending summers with her aunts, Lulu and Bettye, in Maryland and New Jersey, where she worked various jobs.
She would eventually meet her husband to be, Singleton, while working in her Uncle Al's store in Maryland. Singleton and Ellamae were married on May 1, 1948 and were blessed with two children, Sheryl Ann and Michael George. Ellamae worked as an Administrative Assistant and Key Punch Operator for 20 years at Fort Meade Army Base, where she retired in 1968.
She took pride in being a wife and mother and loved taking care of her husband and two children. Ellamae enjoyed spending time with her family. They often took trips to Montclair, New Jersey to visit her sisters and other family members. The highlight for the children was a stop off at Howard Johnson's for breakfast pancakes. Ellamae loved to read and play pinochle with her Aunt Ruby and other family members. She especially enjoyed talking politics with family members and engaging in a good discussion on the current president and other political figures. Ellamae loved going on bus trips to the casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey and playing the lottery. She went on many vacations with her children and grandchildren which included cruises, trips to Arizona and to Disney World in Florida. Ellamae witnessed a Space Shuttle Launch and the wonders of the Grand Canyon. She spent her final years in the loving care of her daughter, Sheryl, and her family in Illinois. Ellamae would say she was truly blessed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four sisters: Helen, Celeste, Yvonne and Billie. Ellamae will be forever missed by her: husband of 63 years, Sing; daughter, Sheryl Archie (husband Keith and granddaughter Krystal); son, Michael (wife Lynn, granddaughter Kristin, grandson Brandon and wife Fay); and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends.
