George Robert Doenges, Sr., age 96, of Linthicum Heights, Maryland passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2014. Robert (Bob) was born and raised in Cambridge, Maryland, the son of George Helfrich and Sarah Helen (nee Bromwell) Doenges. He attended public school in Cambridge, and graduated from Salisbury State Teachers College (now Salisbury University) in 1939. After graduating, Robert began teaching in Anne Arundel County, Maryland at Linthicum Heights Elementary School. From June 1941 to January 1946, Robert served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed at the Medical Field Service School at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. At the time of his discharge, he was a Captain in the Medical Administrative Corps. After discharge, he served a short period of time as a Training Officer with the Veterans Administration, and returned to the Anne Arundel County Public School system in 1947. Robert retired in 1979 with 38 years of service with the Anne Arundel County Public School system. For about the first half of his career, Bob was Principal in several elementary schools- First Avenue, Richard Henry Lee and Glendale in Glen Burnie and Pershing Hill at Fort George G. Meade. For a like number of years, he was a Supervisor of Elementary Schools. During his employment with the County School system, Robert attended the University of Maryland, and earned a Master's Degree in 1951. In November 1942, in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, Robert married his closest friend from college, Edna Williams, who also taught school in Anne Arundel County. Robert and Edna resided in Glen Burnie for 12 years with their son Bob, Jr. and their daughter Sue; and they lived in Linthicum Heights since 1962. Edna and Robert celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in November of 2008. For several years after retirement, Bob worked with a committee of retired educators charged with furnishing the Anne Arundel County "Free School", a restoration of a 1724 building- a project of the Anne Arundel County Retired Teachers Association. Robert had been a member of the Glen Burnie United Methodist Church since 1951. He served on the Administrative Board, was Church School Superintendent, and Chairman of the Education Committee for many years. At Church, Robert was a member of the United Methodist Men, Men's Bible Class, and Young At Heart. Bob generously supported many Church mission and ministry projects and programs with his prayers, time, talents and gifts. In their retirement years, Robert and Edna enjoyed times with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as much domestic and international traveling. He enjoyed visiting yard sales, flea markets, antique shops and auctions. Much time was spent in restoring antiques and in wood craft work. Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife Edna Earl (Williams) Doenges, his father George Helfrich Doenges, his mother Helen Sarah (Bromwell) Doenges, and his sister Helen Dorothy (Doenges) Engle. Robert is survived by his daughter Sue Earle (Doenges) Shireman of Glen Burnie, Maryland, his son George Robert Doenges, Jr. of Warrenton, Virginia, granddaughters Rachael Elizabeth (Doenges) Thompson of Ruckersville, Virginia, Amanda Leah (Doenges) Baker of Warrenton, Virginia, Stephanie Erika (Shireman) Gregory of Alexandria, Virginia and Eliza Blessing (Doenges) Stocking of Louisa, Virginia, great grandson Max Cameron Baker of Warrenton, Virginia, and great granddaughters Shiloh Brooke Thompson and Sage Scarlet Thompson of Ruckersville, Virginia.
