Gerald Roy Claar

December 8, 1937 — February 16, 2024

Gerald Roy Claar, age 86, of Millersville, MD, died February 16, 2024.  Born in the Jugtown Community of Greenfield Township, Blair County, PA.  He was the only son of M. Swigart Claar and C. Marie Lingenfelter Claar and had seven sisters to include Betty Walls, Margaret Vukmanovich, Shirley Zerby, Mary Creighton, Virginia Hassinger, Carol Guyer, and Judy Waltersdorff.  

 He was a graduate of Greenfield Kimmel High School where he played basketball, baseball and one year of football. His first job was at EHNB Claar Lumber Yard in East Freedom.  He also worked at Lakemont Park emptying and repairing vending machines, scooping ice cream and making cotton candy.  He attended Williamsport Technical Institute for Mechanical Engineering, University of Baltimore Business School and was hired to work for Westinghouse in 1958 as an Industrial Engineer, then promoted to Supervisory, then onto Manufacturing Engineering, until his retirement in 1996.  

 

He married Carol Ellen Burkhart on April 16, 1957 in Claysburg, PA and had two children, Colleen Keiper and Daniel Claar.   His current wife of 43 years, Elaine Claar had three children, Steve Ferguson, Constance Giddings, Diane Rowan.   Grandchildren: Ronald Giddings III, Jonathan Keiper, Matthew Keiper, Stephanie Lohff, Jordan Claar, and Benjamin Claar.  Great Children: Melisa Lohff and Alison Keiper.

 

He enjoyed spending time with his family and was an outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and playing cornhole.
