Gretchen Marie Grace

Gretchen Marie Grace, a beloved mother, grandmother, and educator, passed away on January 27, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on February 16, 1942, Gretchen's life was marked by her dedication to her family and her passion for education.

Gretchen began her career in teaching after earning her Bachelor of Arts from Glassboro State College and later a Master of Education from Idaho State University. She taught high school students in New Jersey for six years before relocating to Pocatello, Idaho, in 1985. There, she expanded her teaching to include elementary and special education students, inspiring countless young minds until her retirement in 2007.

Gretchen, was a dedicated member of her sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, for thirty years.  The past eighteen years was spent with the Maryland Chi Chapter, where she served as President for 2014 to 2016

Above all else, Gretchen cherished spending time with her family. Her interests included making handmade cards for her loved ones and friends, organizing unforgettable parties and gatherings, and creating cherished crafts with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took immense pride in her family, which blossomed under her nurturing spirit, comprising 25 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Gretchen was proud of her adventurous spirit, having visited all 50 states, a testament to her love for exploration and experience. She also leaves behind her children: Vicki Panagodimos and Lambros, Michael Grace, and  Tapitha, Janice Grace, Heather Buecker and Ferdinand, George Grace and Karen, Eric Grace and Angela, Brenda Christmas (stepdaughter)  and her brother Richard Scharf.

She now rejoins her parents, Reinhard and Margaret Scharf, as well as her beloved sons Michael Patrick Grace, Frederick Ponder, and Sean Grace, granddaughter Tiffany Cox, who predeceased her. Additionally, she is reunited with her partner, Kevin Reed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 28, 2025, at 10: am at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Nottingham, MD, where family and friends are invited to come together to honor and remember the life of this remarkable woman who touched many lives through her love, teachings, and inspiring presence.  Memorial contributions can be made to St. Michaels Lutheran Church 9534 Belair Road, Nottingham, MD 21236.
