Harry Norris

May 10, 1924 — February 20, 2016

Harry P. Norris, son of Walter and Mary Naruszewicz, grew up on a farm in North Andover MA. He later shortened his name to Norris. Upon graduating from Johnson High School, he volunteered for military service and served in the US Army Air Forces during WWII, being assigned to the 12th Air Force, 57th Bomb Wing as a B-25 pilot and flying 96 combat missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice and the Air Medal twelve times for heroism and meritorious service in combat. Subsequently, he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After college he continued his flying career and was one of the early pioneers in missile development for the US Air Force. He retired from the US Air Force at the rank of Major. Later, he joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a civil servant and participated in the development of the US satellite program. During the latter part of his life, he lived in Glen Burnie, Severna Park, and Odenton MD. He participated in church services and activities at the Holy Trinity Church, Glen Burnie MD and the St Philip Neri Church, Linthicum Heights MD and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His outside interests included golf, boating, and he was an avid sports fan of both the Baltimore Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles.

He is preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years, H. Pauline (Dainowski) Norris, his father and mother, Walter and Mary, his brothers Edward and Chester, his sisters Marie, Alice, Patricia, and Francesca. He is survived by his brother Henry, and his sisters, Julia, Irene, and Joan, his son, Robert, his daughter, Linda Collins, and her husband, Thomas, his granddaughter, Laura, his great grandson, Lucas, his second wife of 26 years, Betty (Nipper) Norris, two stepsons, Jason and Andrew Free, and Jason's daughter Eva Rose.
