Helen Gardner

June 20, 1915 — January 2, 2014

GARDNER, Helen Cole, 98 years old, born June 20, 1915 and died January 2, 2014. Helen was born on a farm where BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport now stands. She graduated from Glen Burnie High School and attended Town State Teachers College, now called Towson University, from 1932-1935. She taught elementary school in Brooklyn Park. Helen married Kenneth Gardner in 1940. Kenneth was an engineer who traveled the world and Helen went with him, enjoying meeting new people and seeing new sights. She even kissed the Blarney Stone.
They lived on Maple Avenue for many years and she became very active in the life of Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church. At the church, she was a member of many groups and taught Sunday school for many years. She was also very active as a member of the Anne Arundel County Historical Society.
Those who got to know Helen soon realized that she was a very lovely lady who loved people and life very much. One of her passions was reading, which she continued to do up until her final weeks.
She is survived by two nieces and one nephew. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, her daughter, Nancy Gaston, and her son-in-law, Bill Gaston.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Helen's name to the Organ Fund of the Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane, Linthicum, MD 21090.
