Henry Hein

April 18, 1919 — February 15, 2006

On February 15, 2006, Henry Leonard Hein passed on. Henry is survived by his loving wife of many years, Carolyn R. Hein (nee Sonnenleiter); his dear son, Ernest H. Hein; his dear brother, Reverend Charles L. Hein; his lovely sister, Irene Lipin; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Henry's family roots in the community go back more than a century. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He was assigned as a Tech. Sgt. and reported to "Shangri-La" (now known as Camp David) with orders to establish a telephone communication system at this location in Thurmont, Maryland. Henry owned and operated the family business, Hein Hardware in Glen Burnie until 1980. He has been a bank director for 50 years and a senior bank officer for more than 30 years. He served as the President/CEO/Chairman of the Board of The Bank of Glen Burnie from 1989 until January 1992, and continued as Chairman until 1955. In 1966 he joined with a group of other bankers and investors to form County National Bank. He served as Chairman of the Board until May 2000 and then served as Director until his recent appointment to the position, Director Emeritis. He served as a Director of the Maryland Food Center Authority for 28 years, and was Chairman of the Board for 19 consecutive years, then as Vice Chairman. The Authority honored him in 1997 with the dedication of the new Henry L. Hein Administrative Services Building. Henry was with North Arundel Hospital, now know as Baltimore Washington Medical Center, from its very beginning when he canvassed the area door-to-door to ask resident for contributions. He was asked to serve on the Board of Directors in 1966 and held that position for over 30 years. He worked for 28 years as the Vice President and Treasurer. Henry was a member of the Glen Burnie Improvement Association since the 1940's and was honored as "Citizen of the Year". He was also the recipient of the "Richard H. Carter Memorial Award", which honors an outstanding Glen Burnie volunteer. Henry was a member of the "Glen Burnie Urban Renewal Committee", now known as the "Glen Burnie Town Center Advisory Committee". As a Chairman of the Committee, he was very instrumental in the development of the Glen Burnie Town Center. In appreciation of his efforts, the town center plaza bears a plaque designating it as the "Henry L. Hein Plaza". His lifelong dedication to the community and service earned him the "Good Scout Award" which was presented by the Baltimore Areas Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Henry was also the Vice President of the "One Hundred Club of Anne Arundel County" since its inception in April 2000. He served on the Board of the "Anne Arundel Historical Society". He was a member and past-president of the "Glen Burnie Kiwanis Club" for half a century. He was also the superintendent of the Sunday school of "St. Alban's Church" for over 20 years. Henry enjoyed many hobbies which included woodworking, boating, watching football and travelling. His greatest love was his family and friends. Henry will be missed by many people, but he will never be forgotten by anyone.
