Henry William Schmidt, Sr.

December 18, 1933 — May 11, 2024

Henry William Schmidt, Sr., 90, of Glen Burnie, passed away at his home on May 11th, 2024. He was born in Baltimore to the late John Edward and Mary Grace Schmidt.   Henry graduated from Southern High School in Baltimore City in 1953, and went on to serve and protect his community with the Baltimore City Police Department.  He primarily served in the Southern district of Baltimore but later had the opportunity to run the Baltimore City Police Boy’s Club where he became known to all as Officer “Smitty.”   Henry mentored young men for many years while running the Boys Club which brought him much joy, fulfillment, and pride. He also coached numerous championship baseball teams and many other recreational activities within the Boys Club.  Officer Smitty was a true role model and inspired many young men to also become police officers.  He served from October 1955 to June 1987, retiring after almost 32 years.  He then went on to work in security for Macy’s at Marley Station Mall.

A loyal and devoted husband, Henry is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 70 years, Catherine Helen Schmidt; loving children, Henry W. Schmidt, Jr. (Becky), Donna Lee Norris (Donnie), Doreen Lynn Stuchinsky (Joe) and Brian Lee Schmidt, Sr. (Kathy); cherished grandchildren, Dea Matamoros, Dana Grayson (Nicholas), Dori Carr (Danny), Christian McQuay, Joseph Stuchinsky, IV (Kaitie), Brian Schmidt, Jr., Lindsay Marsh (Jeffrey), Katelynn Musterman (Chris), and Joshua Schmidt (Gabby); and his ten adored great-grandchildren, Dejah, Brendon, Peyton, Maddie, Mia, Millie, Macy, Elaine, Raylee, Elaina, and the 11th expected in July.  He was predeceased by several four-legged faithful companions over the years, the latest being his much loved and best friend, Tucker.

Because Henry was a casual, simple man, and an avid Orioles, Ravens, and Baltimore Colts fan, dress for visitation is casual.   If you share the same passion for our hometown teams as he did, please feel free to honor him by wearing their colors or logo.

Visitation will be held at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services on Wednesday, May 22nd, from 1-4 PM, with a Celebration of Life Service immediately following at 4 PM.

The Funeral Service will be live-streamed via Zoom at the following link:
