Jackie A. Syme, Sr.

Jackie Allen Syme, Sr., 87, of Millersville, passed away on January 20, 2022, at home, after a long battle with Corticobasal Degeneration, a very rare neurological disease.   He was born in Aflex, Kentucky, to the late Frances and Richard Syme. His family moved to MD when he was about eight.  Jackie served his country proudly in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Spec 4, spending most of his time in Germany.  He attended evening classes at McCoy College /Johns Hopkins University Engineering School  and worked most of his career in Anne Arundel County as a Civil Engineer.  Jackie was a long-time member of Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, ushering at the early morning service for many years.   In his youth, Jackie was an excellent baseball player.  As he got older, Jackie enjoyed walking on the B&A Trail, playing tennis, bowling, and cheering on the Orioles and Ravens. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his family, especially watching his grandchildren’s sports games.  Another great love was traveling, both in and out of the US.

Jackie is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Ruth E. Syme; his beloved children, Dr. Jackie A. Syme, Denise ( Robert) Desverreaux, and Bonnie (Tony) Baney; his cherished grandchildren, Maddison, William, Sarah, Ryan, Brendan, Andrew Syme, Alex, Emily, Ethan Desverreaux, Joshua, Jacob, and Jonah Baney and his dear brother James C. Syme.  He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Syme.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Feb. 5th, 2022 at 2:00PM, with visitation before the service at 1:00PM in the church parlor at Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane, Linthicum, MD 21090.
