James Furlong

March 22, 1933 — May 5, 2008

James D. Furlong, 75, a 54-year resident of Glen Burnie who served over 50 years on Fort George G. Meade, died May 5 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mr. Furlong was born March 22, 1933 in Baltimore. He served in the Army from 1948 to 1952. He saw combat with the 440th Signal Aviation Construction Battalion in Korea and was decorated with the Korean Service Medal with three battle stars. Mr. Furlong began his service to the Fort Meade community in his youth delivering papers on post, then served as a civilian in the telecommunications field on Fort Meade for over half a century. He was a member of American Legion Post 276 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Furlong enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, including his fellow veterans at Post 276 and the VFW. Survivors include his wife, Della L. Furlong, whom he married in 1981; two sons, James Furlong of New Windsor and Darrin Furlong of Westminster; six daughters, Audrey Furlong and Darlene Shacka of Baltimore, Antoinette Rambeau of Severn, Etta Morin of San Antonio, Joann Vidal of San Diego, and Theresa Archibald of Pasadena; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 7pm Wednesday at American Legion Post 276, 8068 Quarterfield Road in Severn. Interment is private.
