John Steele Moore, 90, of Glen Burnie,Maryland, passed away on March 30,2023 at Future Care Chesapeake in Arnold, Maryland. John was born in Kenbridge, Virginia on March 8, 1933 to the late John Robert Moore and Richetta Steele Moore. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Moore and sister-in-law, Gloria Moore.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Darlene; loving daughters, Brenda Pelka (David), Cheryl Rivas, and Pam Waters (Gary); cherished grandchildren, Stephanie, Sophia, Serena, Alex, Maria, Jesse, Lucas, Nick and Cody; and beloved great-grandchildren, Brody and Mia.
John honorably served in the United States Navy from 1952-1960. He spent two of those years stationed in Japan, a place he loved. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from the University of Maryland and went on to work at Westinghouse, retiring after 37 years of service.
John was a longtime member of Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church (currently Brooklyn Community United Methodist Church). He was actively involved in the church where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, volunteered with the food program for the community and helped with building repairs.
John was a “jack of all trades’ and could do just about anything he put his mind to. He loved traveling to many places in the world-China, Pakistan, Europe, Israel, Egypt, and Africa. John helped start a foundation in Tanzania, Africa to build a school and scholarship program for children there. John had a special place in his heart for places closer to home too. He loved going to the family cabin near Cowan’s Gap, Pennsylvania, the UMC Camp Harmison in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, where we spent many summer vacations with families from the church, and camping on Assateague Island with his daughters. He had a special interest in photograghy and loved presenting “slide shows” of his travels. John was an avid reader and lifelong learner-fascinated with technology, science and history.
Family and friends may gather at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services in Glen Burnie, MD, on Friday, April 28, 2023, for visitation from 2:00-4:00 pm. A memorial service will immediately follow at 4:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Brooklyn Community United Methodist Church, 110 Townsend Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21225.
