On Thursday, June 13, 2024, Jon Stuart Squire of Linthicum, MD passed away peacefully with family by his side. Beloved husband of Sharon King Squire; loving father of Robert J. Squire and his wife, Ann, Dale L. Squire and his wife, Tina, and Thomas M. Squire and his wife, Gilma; devoted grandfather of Jayme, Shawn, Laura, David, Grace, Cassandra, and Nicholas; and cherished great-grandfather of Victoria, Richard, and Charlotte.
Born on January 9, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, Jon had an illustrious career marked by significant contributions to technology and education. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Los Angeles University, conducted dissertation research at UMBC, and held M.S. degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering, as well as a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, all from the University of Michigan. Jon had a distinguished career at Westinghouse Electric Corporation, where he transitioned radar systems from analog to digital, leading software development for military aircraft radar systems and contributing to numerous critical projects, including the AUG10 digital radar and various NASA systems.
Jon was passionate about teaching, serving as a professor at UMBC for 22 years and as the faculty advisor for the Linux User Group. His dedication to education and mentorship left a lasting legacy. Jon was deeply committed to his community, actively participating in the Civil Air Patrol and the Boy Scouts of America, where he received the Silver Beaver Award from the Baltimore Area Council for his exceptional service. He diligently shared his knowledge through various online platforms, including a website he maintained to provide tools for advanced algorithms and other educational resources. In his later years, Jon enjoyed hobbies such as 3D printing and was pursuing a world record for the number of Freecell games won with the Guinness Book of World Records.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, PA, 1 2nd Avenue, SW, (at Crain Highway), Glen Burnie, MD 21061 on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm where a Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 11:00 am. His Entombment Service will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Glen Burnie, MD. If desired, Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to The Hospice of the Chesapeake, Pasadena, MD.
