Joseph Henry Black

September 19, 1931 — August 20, 2024

Joseph Henry F. Black, age 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 20th at his home in Gambrills, MD.  He was born on September 19, 1931, in Camden, New Jersey.  He was the son of Henry and Edna Harmoning Black. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Marjorie May Wagner Black; his sister, Margaret Logan; and by his beloved grandson, Jonathan Luke Black.

Mr. Black was a graduate of the University of Baltimore, worked for 32 years at IBM and 30 years at H & M Wagner & Sons in Glen Burnie, Maryland.  He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War.

A world class body surfer and rollercoaster aficionado, he was a kid at heart. To his children he was a mentor.  To his grandchildren, he was a source of wisdom, and to his friends he was a beacon of loyalty.  If you were his friend, you were a friend for life.

He loved Stone Harbor, NJ.  For over 70 years he watched four generations of family love it even more.  It’s a footprint of memories that he helped build and will continue for years to come.

He enjoyed traveling and either spent time or passed through all 50 states in the U.S.  He spent his winters in The Villages, Florida.

In 1954, he was married in Glen Burnie to the former Marjorie May Wagner who preceded him in death on August 10, 2001.

He is survived by his four children: Lawrence Black and his wife Pam, Toni Grimes and her husband Kevin, Richard Black and his wife Maria, Michael Black and his wife Michelle; and by Karolyn Brunkalla, a wonderful girlfriend and companion, who kept him young for over 21 years.

He had 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  This generation will be forever grateful for his life lessons, and they will emulate his love and devotion to family.
