Joseph Henry Matthews, the third oldest child of George Dewey Matthews and Agnes Butler Matthews was born on December 31, 1927 in Dorsey, Maryland. His siblings are David, Mary and Daniel Matthews and the late Maggie and Ida Matthews. He lived most of his life in the community of Dorsey until the family residence was relocated to the Harmans community with the construction of Route 100. He resided at 7658 Clark Road in the Harmans area until his health failed. He was a resident of the Glen Burnie Health and Rehabilitation Center until his death on July 11, 2012.
Joseph was educated in the Anne Arundel County Public School System and graduated from the Old Harmans Elementary School on Dorsey Road. He worked in his early years on the farm of John Blob, then later for Deboy Sanitation Services in Arbutus. His employment ended as a truck driver with Merson's Refuse Inc. after 30 years of service as a truck driver in 1994, which he was awarded a plaque for excellence.
Joseph joined the old St. Mark Methodist Church, then on Ridge Road in his early teens after years of training in the Sunday school and Christian upbringing at home. In Sunday school he was a student of Mr. Clarence Hamilton and Mrs. Knight. He lived a quiet Christian life and followed the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have them do to you. He attended church faithfully and regularly until his health failed.
At home, Joseph was the family gardener and horticulturist who kept the shrubbery neatly trimmed and planted the flowers and cared for them following in the footsteps of his father.
Joseph never married, but conceived a son, Spencer Matthews with his life long friend, Bessie Johnson. Spencer has two sons, two daughters and a granddaughter. Left to mourn their loss are; one sister, Mary Matthews; two brothers, David and Daniel Matthews; life long friend, Bessie Johnson; son, Spencer Matthews; two granddaughters; two grandsons; one great granddaughter and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Mournfully Submitted,
The Family
