Julius Clyde Lilly, Sr., 84, passed away on July 20th at his Severn home with family present. Born on June 16, 1928 in Hinton, West Virginia, he was known from a young age by the nickname of Frog because he would always be the first to jump up and go do things.
Julius was a natural born entertainer and a talented country musician. He played many instruments but his favorite was the steel guitar. He met his wife through music, marrying Inis Iona Weber in 1952, who preceded him in death in 1991. Julius ran a grocery store in Baltimore before working 27 years at Exxon Chemical. He left Exxon Chemical to form the Lilly Ice Company which he operated from home until his retirement.
Frog enjoyed tinkering and delighted in telling corny jokes. He would combine those two passions by hovering over the shoulder of anyone who borrowed a tool or worked in his vicinity, freely offering his advice and entertainment. He also enjoyed playing the lottery and scouring the flea markets for a good deal.
He is survived by his three children, Julius (Tadpole) Lilly, Jr. (Richmond, VA), Debra Furlong (Severn), and Twila Tyler (Pasadena); eight grandchildren (Jason Couch, Lorin Tyler, Travis Tyler, Sarah Lilly, Katie Lilly, Justin Lilly, Melanie Lilly and Kristen Lilly); six great-grandchildren (Emily Couch, Max Couch, Joseph Tyler, Kaeli Tyler, Danika Tyler and Kira Tyler); and brother Dolphus Lilly.
