Karen Edith Woody Benjamin was born August 29, 1948 to the late James Harold Woody and Gussie Taylor Woody in New York City. James and Gussie were divorced and James later married Dorothy Elizabeth Marrow when Karen was nine years old. Karen was baptized at St. Martins Episcopal Church in New York and she was educated in the New York City public school system where she found her love of people.
Karen, or KB as she was affectionately called, married Dale Benjamin on January 12, 1976. They lived in New Jersey with the two children, Derrick D. Woody and Jason A. Benjamin. KB relocated twice due to her job at AT&T: first to Virginia, where she became a member of Trinity Church. Her final move was to Jessup, Maryland where she lived until she was called home.
Karen worked for AT&T most of her adult life, steadily rising through the ranks. After 37 years of service, she retired from AT&T in 1997. Karen quickly found that the retired lifestyle was not for her. She returned to the workforce as a Walmart employee. She later found her calling at Bollman Bridge Elementary School working as a student support aid assisting children with learning disabilities.
Karen exuded light and love. She was always a natural caregiver, often caring for family and friends. She even became a foster parent, several times over. KB opened her home to all, always providing a plate of food and a place to lay your head. Unexpectedly, Karen lost her oldest son, Derrick Woody, in 2018.
She leaves to mourn her ex-husband, Dale Benjamin; her youngest son, Jason A. Benjamin; six grandchildren, Brandon Williams, Marcus and Marissa Woody; Jordan, Jailyn and Julian Benjamin; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Debra Woody, Damon Woody; [Adopted sisters], Selena and Yvonne Perry, Ethel Johnson, Celestine Babble and Renee Jackson; nieces, Kimberly Anderson, Elizabeth Woody, Ariel Woody and Nia Woody; nephews, Dorian Woody, Darnell Woody and Damian Woody Jr.; Great-Aunt, Dorris Morris; and a host of family and friends who will miss her greatly.
