Mary Kathlyn Callaway Brophy Ousey (Kathlyn or Kathy) , 90 passed away on October 11, 2013. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on April 17, 1923 to William and Melinda Callaway, one of six children. The family moved to Washington, D.C. when she was very young, and she remembers growing up in the Nation's Capital when it was a very small town.
She and James J. Brophy were married only days before Pearl Harbor, and her first child, James J. Brophy III, was born while her husband was off fighting in WWII. They had two daughters, Kathy and Nora. After the war, she worked to help put her husband through American University, and he went on to join the State Department. She loved this life, and living and traveling in foreign countries was a dream she and Jim shared. Sadly, Jim died in Turkey in 1963.
Kathlyn worked for many years with the Census Bureau and other government agencies. After retiring, she moved to Florida, California and back to Maryland, where many family members live. She and her sister Frances were best friends throughout their lives.
She is survived by her daughters Kathy Benson and Nora Brophy, son-in-law Jim Benson, granddaughter Emma Brophy, nieces Kate Martin and Peggy Pindell, and many other beloved nieces, nephews and their children and grandchildren.
She will be interred with her beloved husband Jim at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
