Leo R. Merkel, 86, a resident of Crownsville for 53 years, died March 23 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Washington, DC, and was self-employed for many years. He started Merkel's Trucking and went into the RV business in 1971. He was also the founder of Leo's Vacation Center. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Suitland, the Elks Lodge, the Eagles in Florida and the Recreational Vehicle Association, both Maryland and National. He enjoyed crafts, boating, fishing, family get-togethers, working and spending time with his many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary E. "Elly" Merkel; and son, Fred Merkel. He is survived by five children, Mary Lee Hoffman of Pasadena, Jerry Merkel of Crownsville, Ellen Young of Georgia, and Greg Merkel and Lynn Davis, both of Crownsville; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
