Lois Miller

July 25, 1933 — February 15, 2021

Lois Ellen Miller, co-founder and CEO of Omni House Inc., died on Monday, February 15, 2021, of complications from cancer. She was 87. Ms. Miller passed away peacefully at her home in Glen Burnie, MD surrounded by family. She leaves behind a legacy of pioneering compassionate care for the mentally ill, running programs which touched and improved the lives of thousands of individuals from across the State of Maryland.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Herbert and Mary Oliver, Ms. Miller moved to Glen Burnie in 1955, with her family when her former late husband relocated with the HarbisonWalker Company. She remained part of the community for the rest of her life, raising her family and running a non-profit health system.

A graduate of Anne Arundel Community College’s Human Services program, Ms. Miller co-founded Omni House in 1981, as an alternative to the county’s mental health hospital system. She envisioned a center that welcomed people as they transitioned back into the community from institutionalization. Her vision was for a place that removed stigma and environmental barriers so that people with mental, emotional and behavioral health challenges could live a full life with dignity, privacy and independence.

As the organization grew over the years, Omni House went from a small staff and volunteer-run facility to the largest provider of mental health services in Anne Arundel County. Today, its programs include psychiatric rehabilitation, housing, and community reentry services for adults with mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders. Ms. Miller served as CEO from its founding until two weeks before her passing. Under her direction, Omni House’s services made it possible for people to live, work, socialize and contribute to the Anne Arundel County community.

Throughout her career, Ms. Miller’s efforts received citations and commendations from the Anne Arundel County Executive, Maryland House of Representatives, Maryland State Senate, and the Office of the Governor. She received numerous awards for her service to the community and to the mental health profession.

Ms. Miller is survived by an extended family of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was beloved by the entire Omni House staff. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Ms. Miller’s memory be made to Omni House.
