Cmdr. Lively died May 17 at Johns Hopkins Hospital after battling cancer for four years. He was born in South Bend, Indiana and graduated from Riley High School in 1965. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1976 with a bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984 with an ocean engineering degree in Naval architecture and marine engineering and a master's degree in electrical engineering and computer science. Cmdr. Lively served in the Navy for 23 years and retired in 1989. He continued to work in engineering after retiring from the military and most recently served as vice-president of the Syntek Technologies Power Systems Division in Arlington, VA. He was a member of the American Naval Society of Naval Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He especially enjoyed the water and was an avid boater. He enjoyed exploring the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries with his wife aboard their boat, Lively Lady. He also enjoyed bicycling with his sons in Maryland and on the Eastern Shore. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Joan Humbert Lively; two sons, David Lively and Jeff Lively; one daughter, Sherri Greene; his parents, George Lively and Verna Shupe Lively; two sisters, Mary Pierce and Cathy Pollachek and eight grandchildren.
There will be full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Please arrive no later than 10:30 AM on August 8th.
