Margaret Rockafellow Fanning passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013 at the age of 91. She recently lived in Glen Burnie, Maryland, but considered Silver Spring her hometown.
Margaret (Marnie) was born on June 3, 1921 in Camden, South Carolina to Col. L. Hoyt and Margaret Rockafellow. She attended Duke Univ. and worked overseas for the Red Cross. Margaret was retired from the National Security Agency.
Margaret was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Braun. She is survived by her children: Doug Fanning and his wife Lisa; Peggy Flohr; Tad Fanning and his partner Joe Warren. Margaret is also survived by her son-in-law Jon Braun, her sister Tanny Gunn, and seven grandchildren: Brandon Flohr, Alisha (Braun) Nealon, Madeline Fanning, Caitlin Braun, Conrad Braun, Courtney Flohr, and Molly Braun.
Margaret's life dedication and pride were her four children, whom she raised as a single parent. Her life's passions were traveling the world and reading. Margaret's favorite pastimes were visits with her family and friends, trips to Downs Park, tending her windowsill garden, and time spent with Tanya Young, her caregiver. Margaret's life philosophy can be surmised from this quote from The Fourth Little Pig, by Teresa Celsi, "And as for their sister, the daring Pig Four, she traveled. She knows there are worlds to explore. If only you're willing to open the door... "
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Ann's Infant Home in Hyattsville, MD.
