On Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Melvin M. Pumphrey of Glen Burnie died at his home. He was 85 years old. He worked his family farm in Anne Arundel County in the 1940's and 1950's until it was sold. At which time he became an excavator for many years. He and his wife of 61 years, Dorothy lived on 3rd Avenue in Ferndale for 50 years and continued his love of gardening. Mr. Pumphrey was well know for his backyard vegetable garden. Family, friends and neighbors were the recipients of its very productive yield from spring until late fall. His tomatoes were his PRIDE!
Mr. Pumphrey belonged to the Kiwanis Club, and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed all the social activities of these organizations. He was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels for over 15 years. In later years, he was an enthusiastic participant in the annual "Ferndale Days" festivities offering hot dogs and cokes to its many visitors.
Mr. Pumphrey is survived by his beloved wife Dorthy (nee Tacka), one son Pete and his wife Jackie. Two granddaughters Melissa Nemeth and Robin Pumphrey as well as Missy's husband Carey. Cherished great grandfather of Jack, Luke, Lily, and Jasper. Fond brother of Peggy Lamdin, and Eutha Persun, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceeded in death by his mother and father Earl and Ida Pumphrey and one brother William Pumphrey. His wife and family will miss him greatly.
