On Sunday, November 28, 2021, Michael Frederick Alt, Sr. (Mike) was called home to his eternal rest. He was born on May 24, 1927 in Baltimore, MD to the late Frederick and Alice (Thiess) Alt. Mike was the second of eight siblings, six of whom predeceased him in death: Mary Ann Alt, Mildred Airey (Herbert), Thomas Alt (Mary), Elizabeth Capo (Richard), Jerome Alt (Joan), and Joseph Alt (Mary Frances). He is survived by his youngest sister, Alice Ann Krueger (Richard).
Mike went to both St. Rose of Lima School in Brooklyn and St. Mary's Star of the Sea School in South Baltimore. He started school at the of age seven and finished his schooling after completing eighth grade to go to work in order to help support his family.
In July 1945, Mike was drafted into the Army. He served at Shepherd Field, Texas and Chanute Field, Illinois. On November 30, 1945, he was honorably discharged due to poor hearing and returned home to South Baltimore. He initially worked hanging wallpaper, then went on to join his father installing windows in newly-framed homes for Welsh Construction Company, which eventually became Regional Management. He then became a subcontractor for them, where he worked until retiring at the age of 70.
In his earlier years, Mike was a member of a bowling league and worked at the bowling alley setting up bowling pins on Charles and Hamburg Streets in South Baltimore. It was there one evening that he met the love of his life, Jennie Norrine Miles. The two were married on June 4, 1949. They purchased a home on Riverside Avenue in South Baltimore, where they stayed until 2002 after having raised nine children.
Mike enjoyed more than just bowling. He was always out visiting family, enjoying weekends at their vacation homes: first at Venice on the Bay, then Rumley Island, then bayside in Ocean City, and finally in a smaller Ocean City condo. He enjoyed fishing and crabbing, riding a bike, watching football and golf as well as watching old time movies and cowboy shows on TV. He also enjoyed playing the piano.
Mike and Norrine also traveled throughout the years, having visited Alaska, Hawaii, Europe, and even becoming snowbirds in Florida during the winter.
Mike was blessed with 94 years of life. The last 3 years were his most challenging after losing his beloved wife in June 2018. He was then living with her at Charlestown Retirement Community. In March 2021, Mike moved to Peartree Assisted Living in Pasadena.
Mike is survived by his nine children: Michael Alt, Jr., (LaVerne), Timothy “Poncho” Alt (Carole, deceased), Marianne Gruss (Edward, deceased), Patricia Ford (Robert), Susan Shelley (William), Paul Alt (Brigitte), Regina McClain (Louis), Janet Persichitti (Gilbert), and Mark Alt (Deborah). He was the proud grandfather of 26 grandchildren: Michele Jefferson, Paul Alt, Jr., Justina Heitt, Michael Alt, III, Timothy Alt, Jr., Jessica Judy-Ford Connolly, Patrick Alt, David Alt, Edward Gruss, Thad Gruss, Maria McClain, Mindy Alt, Veronica Trader, Rebecca Ford, Robert Ford (deceased), William Shelley, Jr., Benjamin Shelley, Louis McClain, Jr., Jennie Lee, Shelby Bender, Stephanie Persichitti, Caitlyn McClain, Anthony Persichitti, Tyler McClain, Michael Persichitti, and Gina Aguilera. He is also the proud great-grandfather of numerous great-grandchildren. He received the news just before his passing that a great, great-grandchild would be arriving in the summer of 2022. Mike was also fortunate to have many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
