Michael Kenneth Pumphrey, 54, of Severna Park, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family, at Baltimore Washington Medical Center on Sunday July 25.
He was born on May 31, 1956 in Baltimore, to the late Linton B., and Ilse M. Pumphrey.
Michael was a 1974 graduate of Severna Park High School, and graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1979 with a degree in Art Studio. At Maryland, Michael was a member of the Diamondback Newspaper staff and drew a popular cartoon feature for the paper. After graduation he was an editorial cartoonist and illustrator for the Journal Newspapers.
His work career with ARD, General Physics, and Honeywell (Big Dig, Boston) took him all over the country where he made lifelong friends. He was most recently employed with BITH Group Technologies in Baltimore.
Michael was a former representative to the Greater Severna Park Council, a past membership Director for the North Cape Arthur Swim Club, and played cards monthly with the original North Cape Arthur Poker Club. As a lifelong learner, he enjoyed collaborating with other WWII history enthusiasts to write features for Wikipedia. His eye for detail and thorough research earned him Wikipedia honors from his peers. He was an avid supporter of Maryland Athletics, particularly Women's Lacrosse, and enjoyed friendly banter with posters on Laxpower. He especially enjoyed attending Raven games with his brother, Lint. Michael loved to debate current events, and took pride in finding and buying items made in the USA, and encouraged others to do the same. He was a frequent winner in the Capital Newspaper's yearly Tacky Postcard contest. Michael also took pleasure in supporting the Severna Park Stage Company, Rock N Roll Revival, and any activity in which his daughters participated. His quick wit and observational humor will be missed by his many friends and family.
Michael is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ann, daughters Katie and Emily, his brother Linton C. Pumphrey, and sisters Linda Senger, Mary Joyce and Betty Pumphrey and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother David M. Pumphrey.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to programs that Michael supported and enjoyed.
