Muriel Carter, longtime Glen Burnie resident and community volunteer, died Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the age of 86.
The daughter of Fred W. Gruhn, a postal worker, and Ethel B. Gruhn, a homemaker, Ms. Carter was born in Ferndale and raised in Glen Burnie. She graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1945. In 1947, she married her husband, Richard Carter. They raised their children in Glen Burnie and worked together at many local volunteer activities until he passed away in 1990.
Ms. Cater held the position of President, Board of Election Supervisors for Anne Arundel County for twenty-one years.
She was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church, serving at various times as Vestry Member, Senior Warden and President of the Women's Guild. She also volunteered her time and talents in countless projects to help St. Alban's and its parishioners.
Ms. Carter joined the Glen Burnie Improvement Association when women were initially admitted in 1969, serving that organization as Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, 1st Vice President, Board Member and as its first woman President. Additionally, Ms. Carter served as the first woman chair of the Big Glen Burnie Carnival (1987 & 1988) and over the years contributed to that event in immeasurable ways.
She actively participated in local politics and supported a wide variety of initiatives to enhance the quality of life within the community of Glen Burnie.
Ms. Carter is survived by her son, William F. Carter and his wife Bonnie; her daughter, Candace J. Morrison and her husband Walter Jr.; her grandson, Walter Morrison III; and two sisters, Connie Perry and Hazel Arrildt.
