Phyllis "JoAnn" Shuhart Eichhorn, a remarkable individual with an extraordinary life journey, passed away on November 22nd, 2023. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished forever. Her passing creates a void in the hearts of her family and friends, as they come together to remember her and the joy she brought into their lives.
Born in Barton, MD on December 25th, 1932, to the late William M. Shuhart and Florence Magruder Shuhart, JoAnn's life was filled with compassion, hard work, and dedication to those around her. Throughout her career, she made significant contributions to various fields. After high school, JoAnn worked at Kelly Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland, MD, where she was assigned to the Office of J Carson Dowell who later went on to become President of the company. After moving to Anne Arundel County, JoAnn served as a secretary at WANN radio station in Annapolis, showcasing not only her organizational skills but teaching her a passion for the field of broadcasting. Her enthusiasm and commitment added value to the radio station and left her with lasting friendships with her co-workers.
In 1963, JoAnn embarked on an entrepreneurial journey alongside her beloved husband, Martin “Marty” J. Eichhorn. Together they founded the Eichhorn Insurance Agency, representing the ERIE Insurance Group. The agency originally operated from their home in Arnold, MD, but as it grew, the business moved to its current location in Severna Park, MD. Marty and JoAnn were proud of the ERIE affiliation and felt that the choice of ERIE was a wise business decision that served them well throughout the years. The agency is now led by their daughter Nancy and recently celebrated its sixtieth year in business under the Eichhorn family ownership.
Beyond her professional commitments, JoAnn valued family. She was predeceased in 2015 by Marty whom she married on July 26, 1953. She leaves behind her loving daughter, Nancy Eichhorn and Nancy's fiancé Joseph C. Murray, who were a source of joy in her life. Nancy and Joe take great comfort in the knowledge that JoAnn has now been reunited with her Marty.
JoAnn will also be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews who have been touched by her kindness throughout their lives.
In addition, she leaves behind the hard-working and dedicated employees of Eichhorn Insurance including Carolyn A. Wilson, Johanna T. Gartside, Lisa K. Bayliss and Rebecca N. Wilson, collectively and fondly known to her as “the girls.” The success of the agency lies largely in the endeavors of these employees and JoAnn was truly grateful for each one who came through the door to do a job and quickly became an important part of the family.
Most recently, JoAnn relied on the exceptional care and companionship provided by her devoted live-in caregiver, Emma Ampofowa. The unparalleled care, compassion, and understanding shown by this special person allowed JoAnn to remain in the comfort of her own home until her final moments. Emma's presence made a significant difference in JoAnn's life, allowing her to live each day with peace and contentment.
Pastor Matt Eichhorn will preside over a graveside service to honor JoAnn's life. This will be held on December 1st, 2023, starting at 11:00 am, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in LaVale, MD. Located at 11128 Cash Valley Road, N.W., the serene surroundings of this tranquil place will provide comfort as we gather to pay our respects and celebrate her remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, a charity close to JoAnn's heart, in memory of her. She dedicated herself to serving others during her time on earth and continuing that legacy would be an apt tribute to commemorate her life.
We extend our deepest condolences to Nancy Eichhorn, Joseph C. Murray, all family members, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing JoAnn. Her soul has found eternal peace, and we shall find comfort in the cherished memories we hold dear. Well done, JoAnn. Well done.
