Richard Albert Chaney, 83, passed away peacefully at his home in Ferndale, Maryland on October 30, 2024. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Richard was born on April 14, 1941, in Baltimore, to the late Thelma M. and Richard H. Chaney. He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal. Richard then went on to serve his community for 37 years as a Baltimore City firefighter. He enjoyed fishing, doing yardwork, watching television, and soaking in the sun in Ocean City. But most of all, he loved spending time with his friends and family.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Vera E. Chaney (Welsh) whom he met while serving in the military in Newfoundland, Canada. He is also survived by his beloved children, Darlene Kastner and her spouse, John; Jeffrey Chaney and his spouse, Choi; his loving grandchildren, Justin and his spouse, Kristina; Megan Kastner and her fiancé, Kenneth, and Michael Kastner; and his cherished great-granddaughter, Hailey Chaney. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his sister, Bonnie Schwink and her spouse, Lonnie.
A Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, well-wishers are encouraged to donate to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) or the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
