Richard “Dick” T. Powell, 79 of Linthicum passed away on November 28, 2024. Dick was born on April 2, 1945 in Frostburg, Maryland to the late Thomas and Veanetta Powell. While student teaching at South Hagerstown High School, Dick knew that his path in life was to build a music program for high school students. He came to Severna Park after he graduated from Frostburg State College in 1967 and devoted his life to his dream. He wanted students to experience the camaraderie and joy of making music come alive.
Along the way, he met so many wonderful students, parents, and colleagues who became lifelong friends. He truly loved each and every one of them. They all enriched his life and he cherished those friendships. His final wish was to return home to Frostburg and be reunited with his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Lee-Powell; his brothers-in-law, Herbert H. Lee, Jr. (Carolyn) and Richard L. Lee (Elizabeth); his nieces, Regina Thurston (Bob), and Deborah Lee; his great-nieces and nephew, Melinda Thurston, Alyssa Thurston and Christopher Capps; and his exceptional sons, Frank Valentine and Corey Poorman.
Join Dick’s family and friends as they share memories, celebrate his life, and receive visitors at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 1 2nd Ave. SW (at Crain Hwy) on Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 4-7 pm. (Overflow parking is available at the Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, across the street from the funeral home.)
A Private Funeral Service will be held in Frostburg, MD. Interment at Frostburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in Dick’s name to a local music or arts program of your choice. “Keep music alive.”
