Roger Volrath of Sykesville MD. passed away on June 13, 2024, after an extended illness; he was 78. A native of South Baltimore, Mr. Volrath graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute Advanced College Preparation program in February 1964. He earned a Bachelor Degree in Science Education from Western Maryland College in1968 and began a teaching career in Howard County Public Schools. For more than forty years, he taught Physics at Glenelg High School; being recognized as the Howard County Teacher of the Year in1991. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Volrath was a successful Cross Country and Track and Field coach; garnering numerous State, Regional, and County championships. He is a member of the Glenelg High School Sports Hall of Fame and has been recognized as a Maryland "Coach of the Year." Outside of teaching and coaching, Mr. Volrath was active in the Boy Scouts earning his Eagle Scout in1962 and his Vigil Honor award in 1966. During his time as an adult in scouting he has received numerous leadership awards and service recognitions. He is survived by his brother David Volrath and sister-in-law Patricia Eyre Volrath, nephews Kristopher Volrath and Colin Volrath and their wives Nicole Fidalgo Volrath and Jena Goldstein Volrath, and five grand nieces/nephews Madeline, Grant, Tanner, Tucker, and Hudson. A Memorial Service is being planned for early Fall.
