Ruth Thompson

Ruth Arlene Thompson was born on August 26, 1924 in Hereford, Arizona to the late Roy Allen Newman and Edna Beatrice Morrow Newman. She attended Tombstone Union High School in Arizona, graduating class of 1942. After high school, she continued her education, attending telegraphy school in California. Ruth went to work on an Army base for Western Union for several years, until they closed in 1946. She moved to Baltimore and began working as a bookkeeper for a furniture store. Ruth then came home to care for her family. Later, she worked as a receptionist at the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore for 16 years, where she was able to work with doctors from all around the world.
She retired in 1994 and volunteered at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Ruth was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. In her spare time, she enjoyed solving Sudoku puzzles.
Ruth is survived by her four children, Walter Thompson, Dawn Freburger, David Thompson and Shirley Wingfield; brother, Rex Newman of Missouri; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Yvonne Thompson; and her siblings, Ellen Wright, Cale Newman and Don Newman.
The family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, P.A 1 2nd Avenue SW (at Crain) Hwy.) in Glen Burnie on Monday, May 21st, from 6-9 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, 10 AM, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Interment Glen Haven Memorial Park.
