Thelma Cole

Thelma Cole, 94, died peacefully on Saturday, February 18, 2017. Thelma was born June 26, 1922 and grew up in Brooklyn Park, Maryland. She attended Glen Burnie High School where she played on the basketball team and graduated in 1940. While growing up in Brooklyn Park, she worked at her father's gas station, pumping gas and assisting with car repairs. During World War II she worked as an administrative assistant for a government department at Sparrows Point. She and her father also served as volunteer Air Raid Wardens.
In 1945 Thelma earned her pilots license. She was an original member and Secretary of the Pegasus Flying Club, which flew out of Whipp Airport in Glen Burnie. While bowling in a league with her father in 1948, she met her future husband, Carroll Cole. She and Carroll married in December 1948. Beginning her life as a farmer's wife, she frequently drove a tractor and a 2-ton truck. Thelma enjoyed growing and canning vegetables, and making jam. She also grew flowers, which she sold at the Anne Arundel County Farmers Market on Riva Road in Annapolis. In her later years, she was a "Snowbird," enjoying her winters in Florida.
She was predeceased by her husband, Carroll M. Cole, and three of her sisters. She is survived by her sister Gloria Prudhomme of Coral Springs, Florida, son Murray Cole, daughter Gail C. Ascione, son-in-law Gerard J. Ascione, grandson Andrew G. Ascione, granddaughter Laura G. Ascione, great-grandchildren Emerson and Lowell, and eight nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 PM, on Friday, February 24th, at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, 1 2nd Ave, S.W. (at Crain Hwy) in Glen Burnie, MD 21061. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 25th, at Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church, 921 Generals Highway, Millersville, MD 21108. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church
