Theodore "Ted" Roosevelt Turner, 81, of Glen Burnie, Maryland formerly of Bowie, Maryland, New York, New York and Erwin, North Carolina, passed away on June 7, 2014. He was born on December 8, 1932 in Erwin, North Carolina to the late Frank and Laurenia Smith Turner. After graduating from Harnett High School he went on to work for Con Edison and Grand Central Station Railroad in New York City. As a young man he was a boxer and played baseball for a team sponsored by Goya Foods. Ted's many years of working on the family farm in North Carolina carried over to his homes in Maryland where he planted small vegetable and herb gardens. He loved country music and was a big fan of James Brown and Michael Jackson. An accomplished fisherman, gardener and a great chef he was also an avid reader of black history.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Turner, Sr. and Laurenia Smith Turner; brothers, Frank Turner, Jr., Ernest Turner, Oscar "Tony" Turner, Samuel Turner and sisters, Linda Turner, Lillie Ruth Turner, Annie Laurie Turner and Eloise Turner. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Jenkins Turner; daughters, Donna Lewis of Hampton, VA and Darlene Connors; sisters, Mary Hall Bell of Newark, NJ, Alder Turner of New York, NY and Julia Campbell of Lillington, NC; brothers Herbert Turner of Philadelphia, PA, and Alex Turner of New York, NY.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at La Fontaine Bleue, 7514 S. Ritchie Hwy., Glen Burnie, MD 21061 on Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 12 noon to 3:30 pm.
