William Mccaffrey

William Roessing McCaffrey, 79 of Glen Burnie, Maryland passed away on September 6, 2013. He was born in Washington, DC to Henry and Mabel McCaffrey on July 28, 1934. He graduated in 1954 from Annacostia High School.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty McCaffrey. He was the beloved father of Michael McCaffrey; Philip McCaffrey; Michael Stallings, Sharon Biggam and Charles McCaffrey. He was the beloved grandfather to 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and is survived by his sister, Mary Peach.

Bill was a member of the House of Delegates for PG Co. from 1974-1990, where he Vice Chaired the Environmental Matters Committee, Member of the Special Advisory Commission on Professional Sports and the Economy, member of the Energy Committee for the Southern Legislative Conference and Chair for Human Resources and Urban Affairs Committee for the Southern Legislative Committee. He had retired from C&P Telephone Company after 30 years of service as a supervisor, wrote a sports column for papers such as Bowie Blade, St. Mary's Today, the Enquirer Gazette and Charles County Gazette, he hosted a talk radio sports show for WSMD, he had served in the US Navy Reserves from 1956-1958, he retired from MARC Railroad where he served as the Executive Assistant Administrator, served as a Liquor Inspector PG Co. Bill also was a member of the Brandywine, Ft. Washington, Surratts, Nottingham and Marlboro Democratic Clubs, VFW Voice of the Democracy Citation; was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a member of the PG Co. United Way Executive Board; a member of the Easton Elks, Clinton American Legion, Camp Springs Elks; was the Master of Ceremonies & supporter of the PG Co. Special Olympics; was a member of the Professional Basketball Writers Association of America; Home Plate Club; Society of American Baseball Research. He was inducted into Washington Metro USSSA Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1983; won the Twentieth Coach Award in 1978; managed 1980 Women's ASA National Slow Pitch Softball Champions (the Encore); was a member and Commissioner for the Maryland State Athletic Commission from 1998 to current.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the Special Olympics of Maryland, 3701 Commerce Drive, Suite 103, Baltimore, MD 21127.
