Frederick Fontz Sr

Frederick Roger Fontz, Sr., 84, a lifetime Anne Arundel County resident, passed away on July 17, 2015. He was born on September 29, 1930 in Elvaton, Maryland and married his sweetheart, Thelma Wood Fontz, on June 24, 1951 - recently celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary.
During the late 1940's in to the early 1950's, he was an Auxiliary member of the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Company. He was also a member of their Cadet Program, actively soliciting door-to-door donations of .25 as part of their "Quarter Drive" to provide funding for firehouse expenses by collecting one quarter at a time.
He was previously employed by Carr Lowery Glass Company for 37 years and, after his retirement, worked at the Anne Arundel County Waste treatment Plant for 10 years. A simple man with a strong faith in God, "Roger" was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Millersville and served in a variety of roles to include Usher Coordinator for 50 years and several terms on the church council as a member or President.
A strong supporter of the Democratic Party, he used his time and talents to support several local candidates in their bid for office and maintained an excellent relationship with many elected officials. He was a member of the Roland Terrace Democratic Club for more than 40 years and has served in a variety of positions throughout that time, including Board member, Treasurer, President, and most recently, Hall Rental Manager and Chairman of the Board.
In 1983, "Roger" became a member of the second graduating class of the Anne Arundel County Police Reserve Academy, making him one of the pioneers of this program. He continued to be an active member for more than 30 years and amazed more than 18,000 volunteer hours of service to his community. In addition to his assigned duties, he participated in several notable events to include the 1984 Summer Olympics, the 1989 Pasadena Plane Crash and the 2001 Presidential Visit.
His dedicated service has been recognized by the United States Presidential Call in Service Award, Anne Arundel County Reserve Officer of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Anne Arundel County Police Department. His honorable service has enhanced public safety and directly benefited the community in many positive ways.
Frederick Roger Fontz, Sr. was a man who lived out his faith in the way he has served his church and his community. He reflects God's love in his gentle attitude of service to others and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Fontz is survived by his loving wife, Thelma (Wood) Fontz; daughter, Barbara Fontz; sons, Frederick Fontz, Jr., George Fontz and wife Carla; daughter-in-law, Candy Fontz; grandchildren, Andre Fontz, Frederick Fontz, III and Tiffany Fontz; great-grandchildren, Colton Fontz, Amayah and Aaliyah Matthews; brother, William Fontz; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, George Frederick Fontz, Gilson James Frederick Fontz, Lillian (Fontz) Haupt and Margaret (Fontz) Simmons; and great-grandson, Braden Fontz.
