Patrick Thomas Bly, 55, of Odenton, Maryland, passed away gracefully Sunday, September 2, 2018, at Hospice of the Chesapeake after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer. He was born September 16, 1962, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Thomas and Marion Bly. Patrick enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1982, and served in the Intelligence community. On March 24, 1984, he married Renee Marie Hocko in Wilkes-Barre. Patrick served honorably for sixteen years in the Navy with tours on the USS Peleliu, USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS George Washington, Naval Special Warfare Group Two, and the Pentagon.
Upon being diagnosed with lung cancer in 1996, Patrick medically retired from the Navy at the rank of Senior Chief, but continued his career of service within the Department of Defense. At the time of his passing, Patrick was serving as the Intelligence Branch Chief for the Global Command and Control System-Joint at the Defense Information System Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland. On September 1, 2018, with his family by his side, he was made an Honorary Master Chief Petty Officer by the 15th Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy.
Best known amongst family and friends for his sharp wit and sarcastic sense of humor, Patrick was able to bring anyone to tears with laughter. He was a friend and mentor to many and a source of optimism and strength who put others' interests above his own.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Renee; son, Josh; daughter-in-law, Katie; granddaughter, Sawyer; daughter, Brittany; and son-in-law, Zak Baker. He is also survived by his parents, Thomas and Marion, and his sister, Michele.
The Bly family will receive visitors at Singleton Funeral and Cremation Services, P.A., 1 2nd Avenue S.W., Glen Burnie, Maryland 21061, on Friday, September 14, 2018, from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, at 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401, on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers, Patrick's family requests any expression of sympathy be directed to Folds of Honor in the form of a donation in his honor at www.foldsofhonor.org.
